What Is an Annotated Bibliography? | Examples & Format

Published on March 9, 2021 by Jack Caulfield. Revised on June 14, 2022.

An annotated bibliography is a list of source references that includes a short descriptive text (an annotation) for each source. It may be assigned as part of the research process for a paper, or as an individual assignment to gather and read relevant sources on a topic.

Scribbr’s free Citation Generator allows you to easily create and manage your annotated bibliography in APA or MLA style. To generate a perfectly formatted annotated bibliography, select the source type, fill out the relevant fields, and add your annotation.

An example of an annotated source is shown below:

  5. Reflective annotation example

Annotated bibliography format: APA, MLA, Chicago

Make sure your annotated bibliography is formatted according to the guidelines of the style guide you’re working with. Three common styles are covered below:

APA Style

In APA Style, both the reference entry and the annotation should be double-spaced and left-aligned.

The reference entry itself should have a hanging indent. The annotation follows on the next line, and the whole annotation should be indented to match the hanging indent. The first line of any additional paragraphs should be indented an additional time.

The APA Citation Generator automatically formats your annotations when you download your bibliography.

MLA style

In an MLA style annotated bibliography, the Works Cited entry and the annotation are both double-spaced and left-aligned.

The Works Cited entry has a hanging indent. The annotation itself is indented 1 inch (twice as far as the hanging indent). If there are two or more paragraphs in the annotation, the first line of each paragraph is indented an additional half-inch, but not if there is only one paragraph.

If you’re using the MLA Citation Generator, your annotations will be correctly formatted when you download your bibliography.

Chicago style

In a Chicago style annotated bibliography, the bibliography entry itself should be single-spaced and feature a hanging indent.

The annotation should be indented, double-spaced, and left-aligned. The first line of any additional paragraphs should be indented an additional time.

How to write an annotated bibliography

For each source, start by writing (or generating) a full reference entry that gives the author, title, date, and other information. The annotated bibliography format varies based on the citation style you’re using.

The annotations themselves are usually between 50 and 200 words in length, typically formatted as a single paragraph. This can vary depending on the word count of the assignment, the relative length and importance of different sources, and the number of sources you include.

Consider the instructions you’ve been given or consult your instructor to determine what kind of annotations they’re looking for:

  • Descriptive annotations: When the assignment is just about gathering and summarizing information, focus on the key arguments and methods of each source.
  • Evaluative annotations: When the assignment is about evaluating the sources, you should also assess the validity and effectiveness of these arguments and methods.
  • Reflective annotations: When the assignment is part of a larger research process, you need to consider the relevance and usefulness of the sources to your own research.

These specific terms won’t necessarily be used. The important thing is to understand the purpose of your assignment and pick the approach that matches it best. Interactive examples of the different styles of annotation are shown below.

Annotated Bibliography and Research Proposal

The second major assignment we were assigned prepared us for the third assignment: our research paper. The goal of the annotated bibliography and research proposal was to come up with an exigent topic to write out papers about by reading different arguments. Exigence, as defined by Dictionary.com, is ” a case or situation that demands prompt action or remedy; emergency:” Professor Hays defined exigence as an open-ended topic with many opinions.

I received a good grade on this paper too! (94.75/100) Here are Professor Mary’s comments:

The overall goal of this paper’s revision is fix the formatting mistakes on my annotated bibliography. Because this is just a small issue, I can “self-grade” myself once again and catch any mistakes the teacher may have missed.

Formatting is crucial to a works cited page. Formatting such as italicizing and underlining can be the difference between a movie, book, or newspaper article.

According to Professor Hays, book, movie and periodical titles should be italicized while articles, stories, and other short works should be in quotation marks.

In this book citation, I failed to italicized the book title. The reader has no idea what the title of the book is. Let’s change that!

Student Name Instructor Course Code Date Essay Proposal and Annotated Bibliography For this essay, I will be focusing on the evolution of the portrayal of gender in the Star Wars movies. I will be specifically analyzing the films, Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). The films were produced and released in different decades. Society and Hollywood had different views on gender and sexual identity when the first movie was released in 1977, compared to the 2015 release. I decided to choose this topic as I wanted to examine whether the portrayal of gender in each movie has changed over time. Women have been underrepresented in movies for many years and have often been portrayed in traditional, stereotypical ways. In today ’ s society, more women can be seen in powerful lead roles. I decided to examine the Star Wars films as I am a huge fan and this franchise is very powerful and influential. There has also been an increased representation of women in recent Star Wars movies, and it will be interesting to analyze the portrayal of women in these films. This essay will examine the evolution of the portrayal of gender in Star Wars movies through the comparison of gender roles in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015 .( The theoretical framework applied in the essay is regarding gender and film. I searched for articles that examined gender stereotypes and the role of women in film. I found some sources that specifically discussed gender roles in Star Wars. Although there has been some research done on gender in Star Wars, I have not found any work that has specifically discussed the evolution of the portrayal of gender in these films. Most of these sources discuss the gender stereotypes seen in the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. I did not find many sources that discussed gender roles in the newest sequel trilogy . De Bruin-Mol é , Megen. ” Space Bitches, Witches, and Kick-Ass Princesses: Star Wars and Popular Feminism.” Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling , edited by Sean Guynes and Dan Hassler-Forest, Amsterdam University Press, 2018, pp. 225-240 . This source is relevant to my essay as it focuses on popular feminism and the Star Wars movies. It discusses the representation of women in Star Wars and analyzes the roles of both Leia and Rey. In the original Star Wars trilogy, there were very few female characters and Leia was the only female lead. Leia was viewed as a feminist icon to many people and she embodied many feminist ideals; however, she was an enabler to the male characters. The views on gender and sexual identity in American society in the 1970s can be seen in the original movies. In these films, Luke Skywalker was the main protagonist. In the most recent Star Wars trilogy, Rey becomes the main protagonist and was not the only female lead. There were many significant female characters in the sequel trilogy. The screen time allotted to female characters increased
